MAP Members Reach Publications Pinnacle
at 2008 Summit!
The Missouri Association of Publications’ (MAP) 2008 Summit was a virtual “who’s who” of writers, editors, graphic designers and publishers from the region. For two days, March 6 and 7, more than 150 MAP members gathered at Missouri University in Columbia, Mo., to swap ideas, network, and learn from the best in the business.
Favorite sessions included three back-to-back grammar sessions from Jennifer Rowe, associate professor at the Missouri School of Journalism; a presentation on where stories are born from Jacqui Banaszynski, Knight Chair Professor at the Missouri School of Journalism; and suggestions on using multi-media to reach the next level from Charlene Finck, vice president-editorial, Farm Journal Media.
Mike Sager, best-selling author, award-winning journalist and writer-at-large for Esquire, concluded the summit with a thought-provoking presentation on writing. His articles have inspired such Hollywood films as Boogie Nights, starring Mark Wahlberg; Wonderland, with Val Kilmer; and Veronica Guerin, featuring Cate Blanchett. Sager’s participation was sponsored by the Harte Chair in Innovation and the Missouri School of Journalism’s Magazine Department.
“This was my fourth year attending the summit, and each year I learn something new,” said Sherry Osburn, MAP board member and owner of Osburn Public Relations. “This year I found the sessions on internet research and grammar especially helpful. They provided useful information that I was able to take back to the office and put into practice immediately.”
Another summit attendee had this to say, “The session from Angela Pierchorowicz, Great Design on a Small Budget, was excellent! She provided so many practical real-life examples and shared her personal experience. Her talk made the summit worth it for me.”
Sharon Reus’ presentation, IDEAS With Results, prompted this remark, “Her explanation of the process of creativity showed me how to think like a creative person. Very helpful.”
An added summit highlight was the Second Annual Ranly Awards Contest. With 127 entries, and 39 categories, the competition was intense. Five publications experts in writing, editing and design judged the entries, awarding 37 Ranlys to the region’s outstanding magazines, newsletters and e-newsletters.
Gary Whitaker, publisher of 417 Magazine and GO Magazine, has received a total of five Ranlys and says entering the competition has been well worth it. “Winning has been a huge morale boost to our staff to know that the judges appreciate the work of good designers and writers, even in small markets.”
The Ranlys are named in honor of MAP’s founder and professor emeritus from the Missouri School of Journalism, Don Ranly, Ph.D. A professor of journalism for 31 years at the Missouri School of Journalism, Dr. Ranly is the author of many articles and books on writing and editing and is a popular speaker at businesses and organizations across the country.
