Journalism An Essential Resource

No need to tell those of you who attended.  MAP has another successful Publishing Summit under its belt.  All of you can read more about it in this edition of the newsletter.

When I look back on it, I still get excited.  Just having Tony Silber of Folio: here was wonderful enough (he called the Summit “a great event” and displayed photos of it on the Folio: Web site).  And then there was Roy Reiman.  I have no doubt that most who attended thought he was worth price of the Summit all by himself.  The speaker rostrum and the program were superb, as the evaluations of the sessions attest.

And I am sure the board and all the attendees join me in thanking all of the speakers for their generous time and excellent work.  To a person, they did a superb job, and the success of the Summit is due to them.

Nevertheless, like last year, the Board will not rest on past successes.  The Board met the morning of March 2, and among other important discussions, committed to having a MAP contest in place for awards at the 2007 Summit .

Wow.  That will be a job.  But considering all the other accomplishments of MAP so far, we’ll get it done.

Also, the Board clearly wants a seminar/boot camp in Kansas City and St. Louis this year.  The one in Kansas City is already set – again with the KC chapter of the American Society of Business Publication Editors – for Oct. 19.  Discussion for the one in St. Louis is well underway.  It may embrace at least three organizations there.  It is tentatively planned for late September.

The Board will also begin to find a way to replace me as Executive Director.  I will serve in this position until May of 2007, but no longer.  As John Steinbeck once wrote, “You can only have so much fun.”  Of course, resigning as executive director does not mean severing ties to MAP.  It would be my wish that I never am required to do that.

In the meantime, I am most excited about the directions MAP is taking.  We’ll be adding a couple of new members to the Board soon, and new life will bring new ideas and an ever better MAP.  Be sure to give us your ideas, and be sure you know that we need all the help you can give us..
